Better Go Mad in the Wild in the Main Competition of the Karlovy Vary Festival
Slovak director Miro Remo, known for his documentary style and authentic perspective on human lives, returns with a new film. His latest work, Better Go Mad in the Wild, will have its world premiere at the 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
After four years, Slovak documentarian Miro Remo returns to the main competition of KVIFF with his documentary Better Go Mad in the Wild. The 83-minute film, a Czech-Slovak co-production, will have its world premiere in the Crystal Globe Competition at the 59th edition of the festival (July 4–12, 2025), once again affirming Remo’s position as a leading figure in contemporary Central European documentary cinema.
The film follows the lives of people who have consciously chosen to abandon civilization and live in complete solitude or harmony with nature. Remo once again explores life on the margins of society—this time offering a more poetic and philosophical reflection on freedom, isolation, and their impact on human existence through the film's main characters: twin brothers Franta and Ondra. In the poetic atmosphere of misty Šumava mornings and dark nights, the film raises a universal question: How much freedom can a person endure? And how much loneliness can one bear? Although they appear inseparable, the brothers are increasingly divided by their differing desires.
Franta and Ondra, eternal children, indistinguishable twins living in a magical world with their domestic animals, share every day, every routine, every thought. Outwardly mirrors of each other, they are internally two utterly different souls. Years of inseparable cohabitation have begun to overwhelm them. Franta yearns for freedom, dreams of flying, of a world beyond the walls that bind them. He longs to leave the “nest,” while Ondra remains grounded, content, rooted, confined to what he knows. Can anything still separate them? Is escape even possible when your whole world wears your face? Will love prevail—or will death be the only thing that finally divides them?
